Advising Experiences of First Year International Doctoral Students

The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how international doctoral students matched with their faculty advisors, what types advising experiences they had, and these interactions influenced first-year success in programs. We applied the lens developmental situate our sample due framework’s emphasis on holistic student support. conducted individual semi-structured interviews 21 attending a large research-intensive university Southeastern state. Our findings revealed that were often an interim advisor. While most reported positive experience, data concerning differences type support based academic discipline. This contributes body literature by studying advisor-advisee matching among students, who are less frequently studied, further analyzing shape students’ transitions.
